Lessons from a Puppy

We’re deep in ๐Ÿถ puppy training at our house. Lots of treats. Lots of saying NOPE. โŒ Lots of belly rubs. I have to hand it to Louie. He’s making things easy. ๐Ÿ˜ Sure, he likes to chew anything he can sink his teeth into, but he does release when asked. He learned how to ring the bell on the door to go outside for his business quickly. ๐Ÿ™Œ Best of all, he sleeps and plays in his crate all night long! ๐Ÿ’ค

We’ve already discovered some significant differences between having an Aussie and Goldens. Aussies can jump! โฌ†๏ธ I meanโ€“โ€“ this dog catches air! He doesn’t need a running start, either. He can jump HIGH from a standing position! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ You can also see the wheels turning in his brain as he tries to figure out everything around him. I’ve heard stories about Aussies learning to turn ๐Ÿšชdoor knobs, and I won’t be surprised if he does that!

Louie is learning new tricks and commands daily.๐Ÿ† He’s also teaching us a few things about how to live.๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿพ Let people know what you need from them– When Louie comes to us, he immediately flops on his back for a belly rub. He’s not shy about asking for it!

๐Ÿพ Find your own fun– We were playing fetch with a ball inside, and he climbed on the fireplace hearth to leap off every time he went for the ball. Of course, he didn’t have to do that. He just thought it was more fun!

๐Ÿพ Rest when you need it– During a game of tug-of-war with a rope, Louie slid to the floor and fell asleep with the rope still in his mouth. He needed a nap, so he took one!

๐Ÿพ Tone of voice matters– Louie responds to the sound of our voice. He knows when we’re praising him and when he needs to rethink his behavior. Whatever it is, say it like you mean it to be heard!

๐Ÿพ Show the love– No doubt this little puppy loves us! He lets us know every moment in so many ways. Snuggles, kisses, wanting to please, those sweet stares! We know, and he wants us to know.

๐Ÿพ Chase the leaves– Louie’s captivated by blowing leaves! He leaps and runs as he follows them, feeling complete joy in the process. Find your own leaves to chase.

โ€œDogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.โ€ ~Orhan Pamuk

We’re listening, Louie. Thanks for the lessons.๐Ÿ’–

    1. Thanks so much for reaching out. Louie is such a smart pup. He’s learning commands quickly and is very motivated. We now understand what a Velcro-dog is because he is always at our side! As you know, dogs are special!

  2. Oh, I can relate to this so much! I’m also in the midst of puppy training with my new furry friend, and it’s been an adventure so far. I totally get the “lots of saying NOPE” part, but it’s all worth it when you see progress being made. It’s amazing how quickly they can learn new things, like ringing a bell to go outside or even more complex tricks. And I agree, pets have a way of teaching us some valuable lessons too. Thanks for sharing your experience, and best of luck with Louie!

    1. Thanks for reaching out! You are so right about puppies learning quickly. Louie is losing his baby teeth now. We’ve even found some on the floor! And we’re taking him on his first road trip this weekend, which should be a fun adventure. Best of luck with your furry best friend!
